Project Details

Lab Name: Healthy Balance Research Lab

Location: California State University, Long Beach

Principal Investigator: Dr. Selena Nguyen- Rodriguez (Selena.Nguyen-Rodriguez@csulb.edu)

Project Name: MIMIS (Measuring & Identifying

Multilevel Influences on Sleep)

Goal & Explanation: The goal is to understand what affects Latino children’s sleep. Studies show that not enough sleep can lead to weight gain. Obesity is higher in Latino children than other groups thus it is important to explore this relationship.

Target Population: 10-12 years old Latino children whose both parent self-identified as Latino

Benefits to the population: The results of this study may benefit the Latino community by helping us better understand what leads to healthy sleep. This can help us to figure out ways to prevent obesity among Latino youth, since unhealthy sleep can lead to weight gain. Preventing obesity can help to reduce risk for chronic disease, such as diabetes and heart disease.
